“Soulful music; the whole thing feels kinda like a 60s mixtape that will take you back without all the hair cream.” :: My Old Kentucky Blog

“I have to admit, I’m still confused about this whole project. But I do know that this specific cut (as well as many others) is extremely dope!” :: 2dopeboyz

“Remember that one jam? Yeah, you know the one. Whether it reminds you of your parents’ 8-tracks/records, block parties in the summer or rainy days spent staring out of a window, there something that is as soothing as chicken soup when you hear these songs. Have you ever wanted someone to take your jams, put them on one album and take you on an adventure that goes from one musical era to another? Guess what? It has been done. They nailed it. They went up to bat for us and the NAILED it.” :: Kill The Microphone

LMM 2.4 - Geochemistry
It’s the first of the month - which means yet another Learning Music album was released today!  But issue #4 is more than just an album of songs. It’s a collection of music videos from some very talented film-makers. Unlike the process for most music videos, these songs were written after the films were completed, creating sounds to fit the images, rather than the other way around.  Wow.  ”All In A Summer’s Day” (feat. animation by Tony Moore) is a personal favorite and this month’s “single”.  As always, you can download free mix stems and sheet music on the Learning Music Contribute Page - but we’ve also posted a gigantic .zip file with all the silent films (in case you want to score them yourself).

Watch all of the videos online here ::

Waxpoetics
We’re excited to announce a partnership with Waxpoetics Magazine to sell the vosotros catalog in their new download store.  They offer high quality MP3’s with no copy protection - and Bobb Bruno’s new EP is recommended on their homepage. Get excited.

Learning Music Monthly
John Wood keeps churning out the hits. LMM 2.3 - An End Like This was released on May 1. The album was produced by Jeff Eliassen and Dave Devine. They picked some of their favorite tracks from the LM archives, recorded the instrumentals in Denver, and sent them to John to do the vocals. So, it’s kinda like a cover album. But John still sings. So it’s kinda like a remix album. woah.

The project just received a great mention in the SF Weekly in an article on innovative business models in music. They interviewed Ian Rodgers from TopSpin (and anyone following this type of stuff knows how much music biz “savior” press these guys been getting lately).  The article cites a number of examples including Radiohead, Trent Reznor/NIN, and the subscription aspect of Learning Music Monthly!

The Sweet Hurt / Obi Best / Juliette Commagere
photoThe vosotros family was out in strong numbers last night at The Echo. Great sets from all three bands.  In this photo, Alex Lilly, Wendy Wang of The Sweet Hurt on bass, Gabe sitting in on guitarrón and Aaron Arntz - the newest member of the live obi lineup on keys.  Speaking of Aaron - after four years of nonstop touring with the Zappa band, he finally had time to release some of his solo material. I think an Amazon review said it best: “The man’s got megga talent! Not to mention just being plan ole COOL!”

The Great Escape Festival
I’m off to the UK on Friday to attend a new music festival in Brighton called The Great Escape. It’s been described to me as a euro-sxsw, but much more manageable (300 bands instead of 3000 ….). I’ll be in London for the first part of next week. And then down to Brighton for the festival (and my birthday!). Currently working on a contingency plan to watch the season finale of Lost …

drumpad + bunny

February 10th, 2009

Gabe and I first heard Bobb opening for Wilco at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago.  They had rigged these pulsating bursts of light to his drumpad. The audience loved it.  I remember standing in the beer line before Wilco’s set - and everyone was talking about him.  ”Dude - what’s up with that bunny?”  Well thanks to the internet - we were able to track him down - turns out he lives in the neighborhood!  Vosotros historians will remember Bobb for opening up our first show EVER in Little Tokyo almost 2 years ago.  And now, we’re very excited to announce the release of Bobb’s new EP, “Dreamt On”, coming February 17 on vosotros. Get ready for 6 new Bruno songs - including a track with fellow Angelinio Nels Cline on lap steel guitar!

It sounds like you graduated top of your class, trained hard, became an astronaut, flew to the moon, and then found out it was actually made of cheese. ~ Gabe

If you’re not familiar with Bobb, check him out on MySpace and read this feature from New Angeles Magazine.  The headline ….  What do you get when you mix Disneyland, Paul McCarthy and French black metal? It’s not a riddle, silly wabbit, it’s Bobb Bruno.

Join us on February 21 at Betalevel in Chinatown to celebrate Bobb’s new album.  It’s a free show - booze by donation (courtesy of Beta Level) - and limited edition Bruno EPs on hand.  We’ll kick off the night with some music by vosotros - followed by Bobb Bruno - and then Keenhouse.
And if you’ve never been to Betalevel, follow these directions carefully.
